Changing Fashion and 1940’s Hairstyles

The 1940s was a time of instability and uncertainty for those around the world. During this time, World War II became a major event that changed the face of history.

This caused for a change in the specific events that both men and women were forced into taking part in, from a different set of needs for work as well as a desire for freedom and a refined look for those in the culture.

This was furthered by the innovations of cinema, which began to redefine celebrity styles for those interested in luxury. The 1940’s hairstyles that were combined in this specific set of movements are one that changed the face of fashion into a more modern era.

The 1940’s hairstyles for women were defined through a combination of necessity and luxury. Because of World War II, many women were forced to move into the work arena to make money for the soldiers and for their families.

This led to short cuts, such as the crop cut, which required little to no maintenance and which was more comfortable in the industrial eras. At the other end of this was the concept of luxury, which was defined by the height of Hollywood and cinema.

The finger wave, curly hair and medium length styles that were refined with partial up dos were all a part of the fashions of the time.

For men, the 1940’s hairstyles had the same division between culture and politics. For those that were taken into the army were restrictions on hairdos with shaved hair and short cuts that were used. Flat tops and other short styles that had a shaved side and back were often used as a part of this.

Men that were still at home and in the work force used the cinema influences as a main concept, which included clean, short cut hair that was parted at the side.

The different political and cultural affiliations during the 40s were one that led to convenience and style for 1940’s hairstyles.

The specific trends that came out of this allowed both men and women to enter their style into society with different looks and trends that helped with a lack of maintenance while still showing expression for fashion.
